  • August 12th Cascade Locks, OR to Payson, UT - A 782 mile day
  • Headed back to TX through the hills of southern UT into NV
  • Hoover Dam and what is left of Lake Mead after several years of drought. The lake is down almost half way.
  • It's 4,000 ft elevation and 109F outside. I am driving 70 MPH. My truck's water temp is 240F and the transmission is 220F. Time to stop and visit an old jail somewhere in the high desert plain of barren AZ between Las Vegas and Flagstaff.

  • On the high desert plateau between Houver Dam and Flagstaff, AZ we stopped to pick up a few wild flower pix and give the transmission and engine a brief cooling off. Afterall it was only 109 F outside. The AC did work great.
  • Climbing into the mountains approaching Flagstaff, AZ the temperature dropped to 66 F as we passed in and out of brief rain showers. Flagstaff is above 6,500 ft elev
  • Two hours later coming down off the mountain from Flagstaff, AZ and into Phoenix AZ at 1200 elevation the temperature had soared well above 100 F for the second time today.
  • August 13th Payson, UT to Casa Grande, AZ - A 820 mile day. Ouch...
  • August 14th From Casa Grande East of Phoenix, AZ to Ft Stockton, TX

  • Back in Texas. Border crossing at El Paso. 743 miles to go.
  • The Final Day, August 15th Ft Stockton, TX to Katy, TX. 5,660 miles total. Average about 11.5 to 12 mpg. Highest price paid for diesel was $3.28 in OR. In other words over $1500 in diesel fuel.
